Reducing risk and bareback sex

There are ways to reduce your risk of catching HIV even if you decide to go bareback without the protection of PrEP.

  • You’re more likely to catch HIV from receptive anal sex (being fucked). If you’re bottoming then get him to finish on your body instead of inside you to reduce the risk for yourself.
  • In one study, roughly a third of recently-infected gay men said they got it from a regular partner. So why not both get tested before you bareback.
  • MORE LUBE! If the lining of your arse is damaged there is more chance of HIV being transmitted. The longer and rougher the sex, the more likely you are to bleed, which increases the risk. Make sure you use lots of lube.

Remember, if you are having condomless sex with casual partners you should get a full STI check up every 3 months. If you aren’t protecting yourself with PrEP, you should also test for HIV every month. You can use the PRIME text to walk into Dean Street Express without an appointment. You can also order a home HIV test online here.
