Joe was reading a book called ‘Straight Jacket’ by Matthew Todd. It looks at the different issues some men face and asks if the gay community is as happy as it should be.
For some men, growing up gay or bi hasn’t been easy. Even if you don’t realise it, being part of the gay community isn’t always a positive experience and this can have an impact on our self-esteem and mental health – the prevalence of depression among gay men is three times higher than the general adult population.
Taking a break from sex can give you time to focus on yourself. While self-help books might not be right for everyone, some books could offer insights to help you to feel happier.
Matthew Todd’s book offers practical advice on how to overcome a range of difficult issues, such as internalised negative messages, pressures to be successful, and body image worries.
Another good read is ‘10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do To Improve Their Lives’. This book guides you through the complex journey of being an adult, offering advice on relationships, dealing with loved ones who disapprove of gay men, and to overcome damaging patterns of behaviour that can hold you back from enjoying a healthy sex life.
