We asked guys on PrEP what they would say to someone having bareback sex without it. These PrEP converts tell you about their experiences and why they chose to use it.
“I’ve had a lot of sex, I can’t really remember how much. I always knew I was at risk and some days I would wake up anxious and sweating, worrying about the weekend before. PrEP hasn’t changed the sex that I have, it just stops me worrying so much. What’s the point of so much worry when you can take these pills and know that you are looking after yourself a little more?”
“I spent a lot of time thinking I didn’t care, but I do care. I have friends with HIV and while treatment is really good these days they have problems from it. I have a friend with KS [an HIV related cancer] even though they are on treatment, and I know guys that have had other problems. PrEP can help.”
“As Nike says: just do it. What have you got to lose? I know there can be side effects from medicine but I haven’t had any and it’s better than the alternative, which will be HIV eventually. This is a breakthrough which we should embrace. If you can’t afford to buy it there are research trials you can go on to try and get it for free.”
More information about the research is here: PrEP Impact study.
“If you don’t want to do it for you, do it for the guys you are having sex with. PrEP means it’s less likely for you to get and pass on HIV. I feel like our sense of community has dwindled a little in recent years but we should protect each other.”
